How to Open a CDS Account in Tanzania: Step by Step
To open a CDS account in Tanzania, apply through a licensed broker, or — since July 2025 — open one from inside a participating bank app. Through a broker you provide your identification, photograph, proof of address and the completed account form. The account records your securities; it is not a bank account and does not hold the cash used to buy them.
What a CDS account is
CDS means Central Depository System. A CDS account is an electronic record of securities owned in your name. Securities include shares and bonds that can be held or traded through Tanzania’s capital market.
The CSD and Registry Company keeps these records electronically.
A CDS account is not a savings account, mobile wallet or place to store spending money. The securities stay in the CDS account. Payment moves separately through the broker’s trust account or the DSE mobile platform’s payment process.
Two ways to open one
There are two routes, and neither is “the” right one — it depends on what you already use.
Through a licensed broker. The established route: you choose a licensed stockbroker, submit documents, and the broker opens the account and handles your orders. The steps below cover this route in full.
From inside a bank app. Since 10 July 2025, it has also been possible to open a CDS account and buy and sell shares without paper forms or a branch visit. NMB Bank’s NMB Mkononi app hosts the Hisa Kiganjani mini-app, which lets a user open a CDS account and place buy and sell orders from inside the banking app. NMB reports more than 6 million app users.
This is a description of what exists, not a recommendation: JengaWealth does not recommend NMB or any provider, and other banks and brokers may offer digital opening too. Check which firms and platforms are licensed on the CMSA register or the CSDR broker directory. Whichever route you use, the CDS account still only records your securities, the cash still moves separately, and share prices can still fall.
Step 1: choose a licensed broker
You do not submit an ordinary manual application directly to the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange. The DSE says a person should open the account through a licensed dealing member, meaning a stockbroking firm authorised to act in the market.
Check the CMSA Complete Register of Licensees or the CSDR broker directory. Match the exact legal name, licence number and official contacts. These lists provide choices, not recommendations.
Ask the broker these questions before sending documents:
- What is your current account-opening charge, if any?
- How long does your verification usually take?
- Which bank or payment account is your official client trust account?
Step 2: prepare the required documents
For an individual aged over 18, CSDR lists four core items:
- A completed and signed individual Depository Account Application Form, called CDS 1(a).
- A copy of standard identification.
- A passport-size photograph.
- Proof of address.
For digital registration, the DSE and CSD Rules refer to a National Identification Card or electronic passport. The identity details are checked electronically. The account rules also require banking details, so prepare an account in your own name and ask the broker what evidence it accepts.
Companies, trusts, clubs, minors and estates need different documents. CSDR may require registration records, resolutions, trust deeds, signatures or guardianship evidence. Use the correct form.
Never send a PIN, mobile-money password or online-banking password.
Steps 3 and 4: submit the application and check the account
KYC means “know your customer”. It confirms who owns and controls an account. Submit the form and documents through the broker’s official channel.
The broker checks that your name, identification, contacts and bank information agree. Approved details enter the CSD system, which generates your account number.
You can also begin through the DSE mobile platform, often called Hisa Kiganjani. Enter your identity details, complete electronic validation and select a broker for final approval.
Keep the confirmation containing your CDS number. Check your legal name, identity, phone and bank information. Correct an error before placing an order.
The DSE FAQ says mobile-platform clients may wait about ten minutes for authorisation after a CDS account has been opened. That is not a guaranteed total opening time. Manual review, missing documents or failed electronic checks can extend the process.
The official pages reviewed in August 2026 do not give one guaranteed end-to-end timeline. A practical estimate is the same day to several business days for a complete application, but the selected broker should confirm its current service time.
What opening costs and how long it takes
The official pages reviewed do not publish one universal opening charge. Ask the broker for a written tariff. Opening charges, if any, differ from trading fees.
The DSE FAQ currently states that maximum total charges on a trade are 2.3768% of its value. It says this total includes brokerage, DSE, CMSA, CDS and fidelity charges. The following illustration applies that published maximum to a hypothetical purchase.
| Hypothetical purchase | Amount |
|---|---|
| Value of securities ordered | 200,000 TZS |
| Maximum total trade charges at 2.3768% | 4,753.60 TZS |
| Total cash needed | 204,753.60 TZS |
This is not an account-opening price or a recommendation to trade. Confirm current charges and the final amount with the broker before sending money.
Why CDS account applications get delayed
Most avoidable delays come from details that cannot be matched or verified. Check for:
- a name on the form that differs from the identification document;
- an expired, blurred or cropped identity copy;
- a missing signature, photograph or proof of address;
- bank details belonging to another person;
- a phone or identity record that fails electronic validation;
- the wrong form for a company, minor, trust or estate; or
- documents sent to an unofficial address or unlicensed intermediary.
Ask the broker to identify the exact missing item in writing. Do not pay an unknown person to “speed up” regulator approval.
How money and securities move separately
Opening the account does not put money into it. For an ordinary broker transaction, the DSE explains that the broker provides its trust-account details for payment. A mobile-platform transaction instead uses the payment instructions or control number issued for that order.
After a purchase settles, the securities are credited to your CDS account. Your broker should provide a contract note, which is the formal record of the trade. Keep the payment receipt, contract note and CDS statement together.
Share prices can fall, and a company can lose value permanently. A CDS account records ownership; it does not protect you against investment losses.
What to do next
- Search the current CMSA or CSDR list for a licensed broker.
- Request the broker’s document checklist, tariff and expected processing time.
- Prepare clear copies and use the same legal name on every record.
- Check your CDS number and personal details after approval.
- Send money only through payment instructions confirmed by the broker.
- Read What Is the DSE and How Does It Actually Work?.
- Use Money Words for unfamiliar investment terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a CDS account directly with the DSE?
For the normal manual route, use a licensed broker or another authorised CSD member. The DSE mobile platform also requires you to select a broker for final approval.
Is a CDS account a bank account?
No. It records securities such as shares and bonds. Cash moves separately through the broker or the mobile platform’s payment process.
Which documents does an adult need?
CSDR lists a signed CDS 1(a) form, standard identification, a passport photograph and proof of address. Your broker may request banking details needed for the account record.
How long does opening take?
There is no single guaranteed period on the official pages reviewed. Electronic authorisation may be fast after approval, while incomplete or manually checked applications take longer.
Does a CDS account guarantee an investment is safe?
No. It records ownership and supports settlement. The price of a security can fall, and the investor can lose money.
