Women Hold 62% of Digital Loan Accounts. What That Means
If you run a stall, sell food or receive payments one customer at a time, a loan’s due date can matter as much as its cost. Digital loans for women in Tanzania should be assessed against the money actually available after stock, transport and household needs—not simply the amount entering a wallet.
Women accounted for nearly 62% of digital loan accounts in the Bank of Tanzania’s 2024 reporting. That makes clear explanations of repayment terms relevant to a large part of the market. It does not mean every woman borrows, or that every borrower has the same needs.
What the figures actually say
The BoT Annual Financial Inclusion Report 2024, Tables 3.2 and 3.3 reports:
- 193.33 million digital loan accounts in 2024, up 101.6% from 95.89 million in 2023;
- 61.9% of accounts held by women, approximately 119.67 million accounts;
- 67% of reported digital credit value borrowed by women, or TZS 152 billion.
These are account statistics, not counts of unique people. Do not interpret 119.67 million accounts as 119.67 million individual women, or 61.9% as the percentage of Tanzanian women with a loan. The table does not provide that measure.
The figures also do not establish whether an individual loan was affordable, profitable or repaid comfortably. For your decision, the useful questions are more immediate: how much arrives, what leaves, and on which day?
What is the money needed for?
FinScope Tanzania 2023 identifies borrowing needs that include living expenses, medical costs, education and business expenses. These findings concern borrowers generally; they are not a breakdown of how women spent the digital loans in BoT’s 2024 figures.
For a trader, working capital means money tied up in the next batch of goods before customers pay. Borrowing for stock may produce sales later, but the timing and margin matter. Borrowing for school fees or treatment serves a different purpose: the expense does not itself create cash for repayment.
Neither purpose tells the whole story. Write down which existing or expected income will repay the loan, and whether that income is likely to arrive before the due date.
Why automatic wallet deductions matter
Automatic recovery can remove money without a fresh approval each time. For example, M-Pesa’s May 2026 general consumer terms, section 4.3 describe authorisation to apply available funds to digital-loan obligations as they become due. Specific loan terms determine the applicable obligations and recovery process.
That does not mean every product deducts the same percentage or starts deductions at the same point. Ask whether recovery happens at maturity, after default or from incoming transactions during the term.
With a predictable salary, you may be able to plan around one expected payday, although deductions can still create pressure. With trading income, money arrives in smaller, uneven amounts. A customer payment may include the cost of goods you must replace, not just your earnings.
The practical risk is a mismatch: repayment takes money on a day when you also need to restock. This is about cash timing, not a claim that women manage money differently.
A trading-week example in shillings
Consider fictional trader Neema. She has a loan repayment of TZS 36,000 due on Friday. The figures below are invented, not a lender’s offer. Assume she starts Monday with no spare cash and retains each day’s surplus until Friday.
| Day | Customer receipts | Stock and essential costs | Cash left from that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | TZS 50,000 | TZS 42,000 | TZS 8,000 |
| Tuesday | TZS 30,000 | TZS 27,000 | TZS 3,000 |
| Wednesday | TZS 60,000 | TZS 49,000 | TZS 11,000 |
| Thursday | TZS 20,000 | TZS 19,000 | TZS 1,000 |
| Friday | TZS 45,000 | TZS 36,000 | TZS 9,000 |
| Total | TZS 205,000 | TZS 173,000 | TZS 32,000 |
Neema received TZS 205,000, but only TZS 32,000 remains after the listed costs. She is TZS 4,000 short of the repayment even before an unexpected expense.
An automatic deduction may settle the debt while leaving insufficient money for those other commitments. Approval based on wallet activity does not prove that the repayment fits her week.
This simple cash calculation is not a full profit-and-loss account. Its purpose is to test the money available by the due date.
Five checks before you accept a digital loan
1. Compare what arrives with what you must repay
Record the requested amount, actual disbursement after upfront deductions and total repayment. A small-looking fee can be significant relative to the cash received. Read Interest, Fees, Penalties: Three Numbers to Check.
2. Put the due date beside your sales calendar
List expected receipts day by day until repayment. Use a quiet week as well as a normal one. Do not count unpaid customer promises as cash already available.
3. Account for stock and existing commitments
Subtract essential trading costs, household commitments and repayments already due. If repayment depends entirely on another new loan, identify that gap before accepting the offer.
4. Read the deduction and late-payment rules
Ask which account can be debited, when deductions begin and what happens if the balance is insufficient. Check partial payments, penalties and rollover costs. Save the offer screen and agreement before confirming.
5. Know whom to contact if something changes
Keep the actual lender’s name and official complaints channel. If sales fall short, contact the lender before the due date and ask what options exist. An extension is not guaranteed; obtain any revised terms in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Do the figures mean 62% of women have digital loans?
No. They describe women’s share of reported digital loan accounts, not the proportion of women borrowing.
Does a higher loan limit mean I can afford it?
No. Your limit is not the same as cash available after expenses and existing repayments.
Can deductions affect money intended for restocking?
Yes, where the agreement allows recovery from that wallet balance. Check the rules before relying on incoming money for another payment.
What if I notice a wrong deduction?
Save the transaction reference, agreement and statement. Raise a complaint through the provider’s official channel and request a written explanation.
Can missed payments affect future borrowing?
They can if reported to a credit bureau. Learn how to check and dispute your record in our credit-reference-bureau guide.
Before the next confirmation screen
Check the total cost, deduction rules and cash available on the repayment date. For another worked example, read what a mobile loan really costs. The useful number is not just your sales or borrowing limit—it is what remains when repayment falls due.
