NSSF for the Self-Employed: How Contributions Work

NSSF for self-employed Tanzanians is available through the Hifadhi Scheme. Official NSSF information says eligible people can register, contribute from TZS 30,000 per month and make payments in smaller amounts during the day, week, month, term or season. Registration and payment are available through an official USSD route, the NSSF portal and NSSF offices.

Contribution amounts, benefit conditions and payment routes can change, so confirm the current figures with NSSF before you pay.

Who can join the Hifadhi Scheme?

The NSSF overview says the Fund covers private-sector and self-employed members. The official Hifadhi Scheme page identifies groups including:

  • farmers, livestock keepers and fishers;
  • small-scale miners and artists;
  • boda boda and bajaji operators;
  • market traders, food vendors, hairdressers and other small businesses;
  • people whose self-employment follows particular seasons.

The same page lists an entry age of 15 to 70, Tanzanian citizenship and residence in Mainland Tanzania. It also says the applicant should not already receive a pension benefit from a Tanzanian social-security fund.

These are published eligibility points, not approval of a particular application. If you previously contributed through employment, receive another benefit or are near retirement age, ask NSSF how your existing record affects registration.

How much do self-employed members contribute?

NSSF’s Hifadhi page states monthly contributions of TZS 30,000, TZS 52,200 or more. A 2026 NSSF explanation describes TZS 30,000 as the minimum and says members may contribute by day, week, month or season.

Another official NSSF notice links the TZS 30,000 option to the member’s benefits and the TZS 52,200 option to medical benefits that include the member’s dependants.

Published option Monthly amount What to confirm directly
Starting contribution TZS 30,000 Benefits included and required payment continuity
Higher published option TZS 52,200 Eligible spouse/children, registration and medical conditions
More than the minimum Member chooses How the higher amount affects future benefits

Paying “little by little” does not necessarily reduce the monthly requirement. For example, TZS 1,000 on 30 separate days totals TZS 30,000. If your income is seasonal, ask how NSSF allocates advance or irregular payments to contribution months.

Check the current figures: confirm with NSSF that these amounts are still current and what each option buys. Do not infer benefit value from contributions alone.

How to register and pay

The official scheme page gives two registration routes: submit the form online or visit an NSSF office. It lists these identity options:

  • NIDA number;
  • driving licence; or
  • voter identification card.

The page does not clearly state whether additional documents, a photograph, phone registration, proof of address or dependant documents are always required. Have NSSF confirm the complete checklist for your case before travelling.

NSSF’s December 2025 instructions give this USSD registration path:

  1. Dial *152*00#.
  2. Select 3 — Employment and Identification.
  3. Select 6 — NSSF.
  4. Select 1 — Register, then follow the prompts.

For contributions, the same instructions direct members to the NSSF payment menu. The scheme page says members use a control number and can pay through mobile networks, a bank or bank agent, or the NSSF portal.

Menus can change. Start from nssf.go.tz or confirm the code with NSSF rather than following a link sent by a stranger. Never reveal a mobile-money PIN to an agent.

After payment, keep the receipt and verify that the contribution reached your member account. The NSSF FAQ lists the Member Portal, NSSF Taarifa app, WhatsApp 0756 140 140, and SMS to 15200 as statement or balance channels.

What benefits can a member receive?

The Hifadhi Scheme page lists old-age pension, survivors’, invalidity, maternity and medical benefits, withdrawal benefits and funeral assistance. Listing a benefit does not mean every member qualifies immediately.

For old age, the NSSF Act, section 25 includes age conditions and at least 180 monthly contributions for a retirement pension. NSSF’s old-age pension page also describes a special lump sum for members who do not qualify for the pension. The amount cannot be calculated from the monthly contribution alone.

NSSF published in December 2025 that medical benefits begin after three months of contributions and described different coverage at TZS 30,000 and TZS 52,200. Treat that as information to reconfirm, because eligibility can involve continuous payment, registered dependants, facilities and other rules.

Before joining, ask for written answers to:

  • When does each benefit become available?
  • How many contributions are required?
  • Which dependants qualify, and what documents register them?
  • What events permit partial or full withdrawal?
  • How is the pension or lump sum calculated?

What if contributions stop for a while?

NSSF publicly says contributions can fit daily, weekly, monthly or seasonal income. The pages reviewed do not clearly explain every consequence of missing a full contribution month.

Do not assume that your account disappears, that missed months are automatically filled, or that every benefit remains active. A gap may reduce the number of credited months and may affect benefits that require recent or continuous contributions. Restarting rules and any arrears treatment need direct confirmation.

If income stops, check your statement and contact NSSF before sending a catch-up amount. Ask how the gap is recorded, whether you can resume with the same membership number and when medical or other short-term cover becomes active again.

Check with NSSF: confirm the exact gap, resumption and benefit-continuity rules before you rely on them.

Where to get authoritative answers

Use NSSF’s official customer-care channels: 0800 116 773, customercare@nssf.go.tz, the nearest NSSF office or nssf.go.tz. Ask for the response in writing where possible and record the date and officer or reference number.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hifadhi Scheme only for registered companies?

No. NSSF presents it for self-employed people in many occupations, including small and seasonal businesses.

Can I pay weekly instead of once a month?

NSSF says payments can be made in smaller intervals. Confirm how those payments are credited toward the monthly amount.

Does TZS 30,000 guarantee a pension?

No. Retirement pension depends on statutory conditions, including age and contribution history.

What happens when I miss a month?

The reviewed public guidance is insufficient. Check the gap and resumption rules directly with NSSF.

How do I confirm that NSSF received my money?

Keep the receipt and check your statement through an official NSSF balance or statement channel.
